It was all over the news, however, the same stream had been repeating itself for a week now. A recent exploitation of an airborne virus had been planted in a humble little town, somewhere in the country, however it, like many uncontrolled viruses exponentially grew and began to affect many other towns before officials finally began fencing off the areas and quarantining the rest of the survivors. The scientists and doctors who were somehow immune to the virus fled to the safe haven on the other side of the wall, leaving the survivors for dead.
There was one family in particular who was focused on. They seemed to be immune, for weeks of being exposed they showed no signs that other people began showing several days in and so they were let into the safe house of the area. For some reason, their eldest son was locked outside of their quarantined home. No one would let him in because he looked more sickly than the rest, with an emaciated frame and pallid flesh… the people thought for sure that he was going to end up like the rest of the infected, angry and extremely violent. The family’s daughter was the one who took it the hardest. She would continuously wait by the window and look out at the heaps of cars and empty houses, through the muggy brown haze that was left over. The family had witnessed many tragedies of survivors being overcome by whatever sickness was going around. The sickness took over their mind and overridden all nerves and preprogrammed thoughts. These people... and animals turned had a thirst for blood and hunger for destruction that outmatched several national tragedies. The infected kill each other and demolish the houses around them and they would continuously, with out any strategy, attempt to break into the quarantined home to take the rest of the survivors down with them.
After weeks of being locked up, the daughter saw a lone person wandering, someone who looked very familiar, it was her brother! He seemed to be still alive and showed no signs of infection. She opened the door and called him over, he paused and turned towards her, walking over at his own pace. The door was however hinged shut by a chain where the door could not be opened all the way. The brother finally arrived, standing clearly a foot away from his sister, up right looking down with red, red eyes. His sister began to cry as her heart shattered to peaces out of guilt. She rambled over how much she’d missed him, but he showed no other sign of response besides the curiosity of what was inside. The mother and father peered around the corner to check on their daughter and instantly ran to the door, quickly shutting it and pulling their little girl away. She let out a gut wrenching scream and pleaded to let her brother in but her father help her down as her mother pulled a syringe from her apron and pierced the girl’s arm. She began to calm until completely sedated. The parents looked at each other and shook their heads. They knew that her hallucinations were getting worse and struggled to keep her quiet, and out of suspicion’s eye.
A week later, the household is running out of food and clean water, and that there is a strange tunnel in their basement that has the door bolted and chained shut. Whatever family that was left was becoming irritable and turned on one another, they became violent as well and displayed signs of the virus o a completely new level. Whoever seemed to be immune to the sickness quickly locked them into the basement to fend for themselves. The mother, father and daughter listened to countless hours of blood curdling screams, things breaking, crying and the infected trying to break down the door. The small family, as well as the other survivors huddled together to comfort on another, burying heads in each others arms as stomachs turned and burning tears spilled over.
The mother was next to go...
One night, like a rabid animal, she began to foam and scream in pain, clutching her throbbing skull as her skin boiled over. She began to attack her own husband who shortly after showed symptoms, too. The little girl watched as her parents attacked other survivors. Panicking, the daughter ran towards her father and grabbed her his gun from its holster and fled towards the door. She paused in front of it, turning the safety off like her daddy had shown her countless times, pointed and pulled the trigger, planting bullets into each of her parents. The force of the shots knocked her against the door but she never let her grip falter and continued to shoot until all the bullets were gone. She started to shake as she dropped the gun. She looked at her hands, palms red from the tight grip as she screamed. Hot tears welled over and continuously rolled over her cheeks, she was too in shock to notice the snot running over her lips as she continued to choke out loud grieving sobs. Eventually she fell over, curling into a ball and still continuing to cry until nothing but high frequency squeals would escape a raw throat.
She heard a knock on the door and wiped her tears away in vain as she also attempted to push blond strands away from her face. The girl opened the heavy door to see her older brother once again, still standing there, red eyed and smiling.
